Our Counselling Approach
The two main values that underpin Parentline practice are empowerment and client-centred practice.
Counsellors work to empower callers by:
- Assisting the caller to develop options for change
- Assisting them to understand the consequences of particular actions
- Helping the caller identify his or her own resources
- Informing them about additional resources
- Supporting the caller to develop a sense of control in his or her own life
- Working with strengths rather than limitations
Counselling from a client-centred perspective involves:
- Listening to and respecting what the caller says
- Focusing on their needs
- Aiming to see the world from their perspective
- Acknowledging and believing that the caller is the primary client
- Seeing the caller as an individual person as well as a member of a community or group
- Respecting the caller
We will work with you to develop a plan based on your needs. This may involve a range of services, including a self directed parenting skills course. However, many of our calls are one-off, and often relate to particular parenting-related questions.
